How to check Reddit karma
Enter the username above. You will see the account's post karma, comment karma, awardee karma and awarder karma as four separate numbers, next to how old the account is. Reddit itself mostly shows one combined total, which hides the part worth looking at.
What each karma number means
| Karma | Earned from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Post karma | Votes on links, images and text posts | How well their posts land. Easy to inflate with reposts. |
| Comment karma | Votes on replies | Whether they take part in conversations. Slow to build and hard to fake. |
| Awardee karma | Awards other people gave them | Content someone liked enough to pay for |
| Awarder karma | Awards they gave to others | Usually small. A sign of a paying user |

How to read the split
The total says very little on its own. The mix of post and comment karma, set against the account's age, says a lot more.
| What you see | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Lots of post karma, almost no comment karma | Posts a lot, talks to nobody. Common with reposters and karma-farming accounts. |
| Mostly comment karma | A regular who spends time in discussions. The hardest pattern to fake. |
| High karma on an account under a month old | Worth a closer look. Fast karma on a new account often comes from farming or a bought account. |
| Low karma on an account several years old | Usually a reader who rarely posts. Normal, and not a red flag by itself. |
| Negative comment karma | Gets downvoted more than upvoted. Often a troll, a spammer or someone who argues a lot. |
When checking karma is useful
- Before a trade or sale. A real comment history is one of the better signs that someone is not a throwaway scam account. The full checklist covers the rest.
- Spotting bots. A strange karma split is often the first clue. Other signs of a bot account.
- Your own account.Check whether you meet a subreddit's karma minimum before you post.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check someone's Reddit karma?
Type their username into the checker on this page. You get post karma and comment karma as separate numbers, plus award karma and account age. Karma is public on every account, so there is no login and the person is not told.
Why does my karma not match my upvotes?
Reddit does not turn every upvote into one point of karma. It applies its own formula, and very popular posts earn less karma per vote than small ones. The number is a rough measure of how people received the account, not an exact vote count.
Can karma go negative?
Comment karma can drop below zero if an account's comments are downvoted more than upvoted. Negative karma is rare and usually means an account that argues a lot, spams, or was made to troll.
How much karma do you need to post on Reddit?
Reddit has no single site-wide minimum. Each subreddit sets its own rule, and many busy ones ask for somewhere between 10 and a few hundred karma, often combined with a minimum account age. The rules are usually in the subreddit's sidebar.
Does the checker show karma per subreddit?
Reddit does not publish karma per subreddit for other accounts. The checker instead shows which subreddits an account posts in most, which tells you where its karma most likely came from.
