How to Tell if a Reddit Account Is a Bot
Look at four things: how old the account is, how its karma splits between posts and comments, which subreddits it uses, and when it posts. A real person usually has a messy, uneven history. Bot and karma-farming accounts tend to be new, post-heavy, active in "free karma" communities and busy at all hours. One sign proves little. Three or more together usually settle it.
The signs, and what they mean
| Sign | What to look for | How strong a sign |
|---|---|---|
| Young account, lots of activity | Weeks old with hundreds of posts or thousands of karma | Strong |
| Lopsided karma | Big post karma, almost no comment karma | Strong |
| Karma farm subreddits | Early posts in communities like r/FreeKarma4U, then a sudden switch to selling or promoting | Strong |
| Reposts | Popular old images or titles posted again, word for word | Medium |
| Empty comments | Short, generic replies like "So true" or "This is amazing" that would fit under any post | Medium |
| No sleep | Posts spread evenly across all 24 hours, or dozens within minutes | Medium |
| Woke up after years | Silent for years, then suddenly very active on a new topic. Often a sign of a bought account | Medium |
| Default username | Reddit's suggested Word-Word-1234 format | Weak on its own |
Check an account in under a minute
- 1. Look up the username. Run it through the Reddit user analyzer. It shows account age, the karma split and top subreddits on one screen, even when the profile is hidden.
- 2. Compare age and karma. A month-old account with 20,000 post karma needs explaining. The karma checker gives you both numbers.
- 3. Scroll to the oldest posts. Where an account started tells you more than where it is now. Karma farm posts at the start are a giveaway.
- 4. Read five comments. Would they make sense under a different post? If yes, they were probably not written for this one.
What does not mean bot
- A hidden profile. Plenty of real people hide their history. You can still see it.
- Low karma. Most Reddit users read far more than they post.
- Disagreeing with you. Calling someone a bot because of their opinion is the most common false alarm on the site.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Reddit bot checker?
No tool can tell you for certain that an account is a bot, because Reddit does not publish that. What a checker can do is put the public signals in one place: account age, karma split, where it posts and when. Those signals together are usually enough to make the call.
Are all bots on Reddit bad?
No. Many bots are open about what they are, like AutoModerator or bots that convert units or set reminders. They usually say they are a bot in their name or in every reply. The ones to watch are accounts pretending to be people.
Does a random username like Word-Word-1234 mean it is a bot?
No. Reddit suggests names in that format when people sign up, and plenty of real users keep them. It only means something next to other signs, like a very new account with lots of post karma.
Why do people farm karma on Reddit?
Many subreddits block new or low-karma accounts. An account with some age and karma can post where a fresh one cannot, so farmed accounts are used, and sold, for spam, scams and promotion.
How do I report a bot on Reddit?
Use the report option on one of its posts or comments and choose spam. If it is active in one community, messaging that subreddit's moderators often gets it removed faster.
