How to Tell if a Reddit Account Was Deleted
Open one of the account's old posts or comments. If the author now shows as [deleted] and the profile page says the user cannot be found, the account was deleted. A suspended account shows a suspension notice instead. If the profile cannot be found but old posts do not show [deleted], a shadowban is more likely. A profile that loads but lists nothing was not deleted at all. It is just hidden.
Match what you see
| Profile page | Old posts show | The account is |
|---|---|---|
| User not found | Author as [deleted] | Deleted by its owner |
| "This account has been suspended" | Usually the username | Suspended by Reddit |
| User not found | Not [deleted] | Probably shadowbanned |
| Loads, but no posts listed | The username | Active, with a hidden history |
The quickest way to get the first column is a username check, which reports whether an account is active, suspended or missing.
What happens to a deleted account's posts
Deleting an account does not delete what it posted. Posts and comments stay up unless the owner deleted them one by one first, but the author changes to [deleted], so you can no longer find them by searching the username on Reddit. What [deleted] and [removed] mean.
Public archives that saved the content earlier still have it under the original username. That is why a search of the archive by username can still turn up a deleted account's history.
Can a deleted account come back?
No. Reddit does not restore deleted accounts, and a deleted username can never be registered again by anyone. If you see the same username active again, the account was never deleted. It was suspended and then reinstated, or it was hidden all along.
