How to Check if a Reddit Account Is Shadowbanned
Open the profile while logged out, at reddit.com/user/name. If it returns a 404 as though the username was never registered, the account is shadowbanned. A suspended account still loads and shows a banner, and a deleted one leaves its old comments attributed to [deleted].
Telling the states apart
| Logged out, you see | The account is |
|---|---|
| A 404, name appears unregistered | Shadowbanned |
| A profile with a suspension banner | Suspended |
| No profile, but old comments show [deleted] | Deleted by the owner |
| A profile that loads with no posts listed | Active, with profile listings hidden |
Checking your own account
A shadowban is invisible from the inside. Logged in, everything looks normal: your posts appear, your profile loads, nothing is flagged. The only way to detect it is to look from outside, so use a private browsing window rather than your own session.
The limits of this check
- Reddit never confirms a shadowban, so this is inference from behaviour, not an official answer.
- A subreddit-level ban is different and far more common. Your posts vanish in one community while the rest of Reddit works normally.
- A brand-new account whose posts sit in a moderation queue can look shadowbanned without being one.
None of these states is a privacy setting. Reddit has no private profile option, so a profile you cannot see is always one of the four above.
Check a username from outside and see which state it returns.
